About Mary Katherine Fiala

Thanks for stopping by my website. I create sculptures and paint in acrylic, drawing on a life long interest in nature, science, technology and fantasy, and the intersections where these fields meet. Ideally, I would like to provoke thought and provide humor. Most of my work tells a story.

The creative process has always been an integral part of my life, usually as a part time endeavor while working at a career in the medical device/biotech industry. I've only recently started painting in acrylics--about four years ago when I started losing my vision. The short story is that after six surgeries on my eyes, I can see, albeit not as well as I once did. For a number of years, I made high relief tiles and sculpture in ceramic clay.  Working with ceramics taught me well how to accept "failure" which is serving me well now as I learn how to build color and composition in acrylic paints.

There are some days when the vision impairment makes it impossible to focus  and I am ever dependent upon the light. When I do paint, it can be challenging in many ways, but concentrating on something that brings me pleasure is peaceful and calming.
